The Coldplay Experience

Before this, I am a concert virgin.

I used to just view concerts from other people’s Instagram stories since two thousand and late and to be honest, I was never really jealous. Of course, in my head, I’d wonder how that feels — seeing your favourite artist play live and sing along to their songs. Thinking more about this, I realised I’ve never even seen any local bands or artists play in the Philippines. I guess that just wasn’t my life before.

I’m not saying this is going to be my life now.

I’ve watched Coldplay concerts on YouTube and for years I’ve always always wanted to be in one. So when I found out last October 2021 that they were going to Europe, I instantly booked a ticket on impulse. Lo and behold, it was the best decision I’ve made.

They did not disappoint. Hearing Chris sang hit me hard. You would think I’d cry hearing Yellow? No. The Scientist? No. Fix You? No. Oddly enough, my eyes started to tear up when he sang The Sky Full of Stars on their third act.

There was something in those words:

'Cause you're a sky, 'cause you're a sky full of stars

I'm gonna give you my heart

'Cause you're a sky, 'cause you're a sky full of stars

'Cause you light up the path

The moon in its waxing gibbous form was also staring right back at us and I can’t help but feel emotional about it. I found myself putting my phone down and just look at the lights from our arm bands change colour. Took a deep breath, I listened, I stared, I let my eyes water. I savoured the moment.

That concert made me momentarily forget the things I worry about, and at the same time, validated every part of my being. What they said was true. Nobody said it was easy.

I’m going back to the start.
